Significance Of Mahashivratri

Do you all know which Hindu festival is being celebrated on the 13th of Feb’18? Let us tell you something about this festival…
Maha Shivaratri is a major Hindu festival celebrated annually in honor of the god Shiva It is celebrated once a year in February/March, or Phalguna and before the arrival of spring. Shivaratri means "the Great Night of Shiva".

Shiva is the soul (of everything) – there is no difference between the soul and Shiva.
Your true nature is Shiva, and Shiva is peace, infinity, beauty and the non-dual one.
Ratri means 'to take refuge'.
Shivaratri is taking refuge in Shiva (the soul). It is celebrating the Shiva Tatva within oneself.

Ratri (which translates as night) is that which gives you rest, or peace.

Three types of peace are needed:
1. Material peace
2. Mental peace and
3. Peace in the soul

If there is disturbance around you, you cannot be peaceful. You need peace in your environment. You also need peace in the body and mind, and you need peace in the soul.

This festival is solemn and marks a remembrance of "overcoming darkness and ignorance" in life and the world. It is observed by remembering Shiva and chanting prayers, fasting, doing Yoga, and meditating on ethics and virtues such as self-restraint, honesty, non-injury to others, forgiveness, and the discovery of Shiva. The ardent devotees keep awake all night. Others visit one of the Shiva temples or go on pilgrimage to Jyotirlingams. This is an ancient Hindu festival whose origin date is unknown.

Different legends describe the significance of Maha Shivaratri. According to one, this is the night when Shiva performs the heavenly dance of creation, preservation and destruction. According to another legend, this is the night when Shiva and Parvati got married. A different legend states that the offering to Shiva icons such as the linga is an annual occasion to get over past sins if any, to restart on a virtuous path and thereby reach Mount Kailasha and liberation.

The major Jyotirlinga Shiva temples of India, such as in Varanasi and Somnatha, are particularly frequented on Maha Shivaratri. They serve also as sites for fairs and special events.

Maha Shivaratri is celebrated widely in the temples all over Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.

Happy Republic Day!

Happy Republic Day!

I am sure some of you would have participated in the Republic Day contest conducted by APlusChamps and must be curious to know the winners of this contest. Also some of you may be wondering why we celebrate this day and what is the difference between the Republic and Independence Day?

What is the meaning of the word "Republic"?The word ‘Republic' derives its origin from Latin rēs pūblica, where rēs means matter/thing/entity and pūblica means public. It means that a Republic is a system of government in which the power is vested in the people. SInce it is not possible for each and every individual to work for the country, representatives are chosen to look after the state. These representatives work for the betterment of the country and its people.

On 15th of August, 1947 India became a free nation, but it was still semi-dependent on British with George VI as head of the state and Earl Mountbatten as Governor General. The rules and legislations that Indians followed were based on the modified Colonial Government of India Act framed in 1935.
Soon after freedom, on 29th of August 1947, the Constitution Drafting Committee was appointed to write a 'Constitution' under the able guidance of the great economist and the first law minister of independent India Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar.

A ‘Constitution' is a set of fundamental principles, rules and laws that guide how a country works. The constitution tells what powers the representatives of public have and where their limits are. It also states the fundamental rights and duties of the citizens. It took nearly 3 years for the constitution of India to be written.

This important set of guidelines called ‘The Constitution' was adopted by the India Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949, but they waited for three months and constitution came into force formally on 26 January 1950. It was finally on this date that India became a completely independent republic.

The date 26 January was chosen because it was on this day, in 1930, when the Declaration of Indian Independence (Purna Swaraj) was announced by the Indian National Congress. Even before India actually became independent, 26 January was considered as a symbol of Independence,. Thus, the constitution was signed on 26 January, to mark and respect 26 January and the freedom struggle and the freedom fighters.

While India's Independence Day celebrates its freedom from British Rule, the Republic Day celebrates coming into force of its constitution.

Parents and Teachers role in Adaptive and Self-paced Learning for students

Teachers are always working for their students. Preparing lesson plans, working on creating just the right assignments and notes, keeping parents informed and doing everything to help the kids learn and grow in the best ways possible.  Apart from dealing with these day-to-day school mundane tasks teacher face two important issues i.e. learning needs of students and students’ knowledge gaps.

Different Learning NeedsClassrooms are filled with students with different learning needs. Their dreams, their background, their upbringing are different. Also each student has different attention span and learning curve. The same class has few over achiever students and few under believer.  Most teachers would prefer giving eye to overachievers as they are usually attentive, enthusiastic, and want to excel.

Student Knowledge GapsHow are the knowledge gaps created? As an instructor teaches a class, students inevitably will experience learning gaps. Left untreated, these gaps cause student to fall further behind. Thus they become knowledge gaps which hinder their progress afterwards. Such students become under believers in the class.

The pain points what we find are -
  1. Classrooms are filled with students with different learning needs
  2. Teacher face challenge managing over-achievers and under-believers
  3. Students Knowledge Gap's hamper's their learning curve

Still, Teacher has to…
  1. Help the students to realize his or her own potential, and faults.
  2. Help the student to deal with disappointments.
  3. Give attention to individualize learning of each student.

parent's role in their child's education is very importantThe productive partnerships between students, parents, schools helps maximizing student engagement and achievement. Parents are the first and continuing educators of their children. Parents find short cuts by employing private tuition or private classes and the story repeats. The knowledge gaps are rarely filled. The tuition's are focused on grades business rather than correcting the knowledge gaps. This is a challenging question for the parent that they need to think about seriously.

It is high time that India needs to adopt Adaptive and Self-paced Learning. Globally, developers of educational software are also playing a critical role in embracing the education system. Software can determine where a student’s competencies lie and then adaptively tailor exercises for the student in order to fill in any gaps. The effect is greatest when the software is integrated into a school program. In a large classroom, teacher alone or software alone cannot get results. Parents should take active interest and help students learn in self-paced manner. Teacher and Parents could embrace the adaptive learning methodology and play close attention to the effect on their kids.

Albert Einstein said, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid".

You may discover you have a gem in your child.  Parents and Teachers help Students Identify Knowledge Gap. Help them bridge the gaps with the help of self-paced adaptive learning and help them build foundation for future.
